Psych Feelings: The Scrap Dealers

Voltando com mais um texto sobre uma banda recém-descoberta e que me agradou bastante. Vinda de Liège (Bélgica), a banda atende pelo nome de The Scrap Dealers. Paixão à primeira audição. Os caras fazem um som bem sujo e barulhento e suas tags do Bandcamp já chamam a atenção: punk, garage, rock, psychedelic, shoegaze. Barulho bom e dos melhores entre os descobertos por esses dias. Os integrantes são: Hugues Daro, Cedric Georges, Regis Germain, Justin Mathieu e Antoine Pottier, sem muitas informações sobre quem comanda qual instrumento, mas isso pouco importa pois são muito bem executados. Com o EP 'Red Like Blood' lançado em março de 2014 e o debut lançado em novembro de 2014, cujo destaque vai para a soberba faixa "No Sense In Your Eyes", The Scrap Dealers tem um futuro promissor e já pode figurar entre as grandes revelações da nova safra psych que aumenta a cada dia com excelentes bandas nascendo. Mais um presente para os amantes do submundo dos bons sons e para quem adentra esse labirinto onde se encontra um mundo incrível, principalmente para os iniciados. Então, sem mais. Fiquem com a maravilhosa "No Sense In Your Eyes". Boa viagem.

What You Are Looking For: Black Market Karma

Difícil encontrar uma banda com apenas três anos de existência e uma discografia tão prolífica como a Black Market Karma. Esses londrinos que se juntaram em 2011 já possuem cinco discos lançados. Discos cheios, com 11 ou 12 faixas, não singles e nem EPs esporádicos. O My Bloody Valentine, uma de suas evidentes inspirações, demorou mais de duas décadas para ter três álbuns de estúdio na discografia, dois deles durante o primeiro período de atividade, de 1983 a 1997. O mais surpreendente é que dos cinco discos do BMK, quatro foram lançados no mesmo ano, 2012. E o mais legal é que tudo está disponível para free download no site da gravadora deles, a Flower Power Records.

Desde o primeiro disco, Comatose, o Black Market Karma vinha ecoando uma sonoridade muito equivalente a My Bloody Valentine, como pode ser ouvido na faixa-título. Cocoon é o disco com repertório mais shoegaze, como se ouve em "Neutral", "If I Could" e "Violet", só pra citar alguns exemplos. No mesmo Cocoon também ficam evidentes traços de The Velvet Underground ("Hold Me Down") e de The Jesus And Mary Chain ("Dirty Water"). Muito shoegazing são também "Stars and Stripes (Hammer and Sickle)", "Slow" e "Catsigh", do penúltimo lançamento, Easy Listening. 

No EP de estreia, All That I've Made, e em Comatose fica registrada a influência de Nirvana ("All That I've Made" e "I Can't Save You", respectivamente). O debut EP de quatro faixas é bem interessante por condensar grunge e shoegaze: passam por ali Nirvana, Ride/My Bloody Valentine e JAMC, mas encerra com um "folkgaze" destoante ("All That I've Lost").

A partir do lançamento de Semper Fi, quarto disco do BMK, sua sonoridade se desprende um pouco do shoegaze e suas músicas passam a soar mais psicodélicas e viajantes, diferenciando-se pela presença de cítara em algumas faixas. Algumas das melhores canções deste disco são: "Running On Dry", "Don't You Know", "I Am Life", "Head Full Of Fuzz", "Andrea's Drum" e "Sitary-Wary". Em janeiro de 2014, o Black Market Karma lançou Upside Out Inside Down, que segue a mesma linha psych do disco anterior, lembrando menos as referências dos lançamentos de 2012, com destaques para "Aheeha", "Outside I", "Skullgroover", "Heady Ideas", "Yes You Can" e "Only Once".

Psych Feelings: TAU

Mais um banda nasce no submundo dos bons sons, e já começa com tudo: o novíssimo projeto chamado TAU, diretamente de Berlim. O responsável pela beleza sonora chama-se Shaun Nunutzi Mulrooney. O cara trabalha com os Dead Skeletons, então para os iniciados acho que dispensa apresentações ou tecer qualquer tipo de comentário. O som passeia pelo experimentalismo, psychedelic e krautrock no melhor estilo Brian Jonestown Massacre e Dead Skeletons. Na primeira audição foi paixão instantânea. Todos os instrumentos ficam a cargo do próprio Shaun, com dois excelentes sons lançados: "The Trickster", lançado em junho de 2014, e "Huey Tonantzin (Madre Tierra)", lançado em julho de 2014. TAU faz com maestria o que de melhor temos na atualidade no psych e consolida ainda mais a cena que é umas das vertentes mais autênticas e belas da música. É bom ficarmos de olho, pois vem ainda muita coisa boa de Shaun e seu hipnótico TAU. Aumente o som e boa viagem.

Psych Feelings: Grass On The Sun

Existe uma safra nova de bandas incríveis da cena psych mundial. E diretamente da Itália, além do já cultuadíssimo Sonic Jesus, conheci outra banda igualmente genial, a Grass On The Sun, que faz um psychedelic shoegaze spacerock fortemente influenciado pelos mestres Jesus and Mary Chain e Spacemen 3. O duo composto por Alessandro Hicks (vocais e guitarras) e Gabriele Sancho (bateria, baixo e demais efeitos) conta com um EP lançado em junho deste ano contendo duas faixas: "The Corner" e a maravilhosa "I Feel It Coming", que conta com um vídeo oficial incrível. Sem dúvida a Grass On The Sun vem adicionar e muito à cena psych que anda mais efervescente do que nunca. Boa viagem.

From Birmingham, with pride: STV interviews The Exploding Sound Machine

Tell us how The Exploding Sound Machine got started.

Joey: The band got together really by chance, I was working in a vintage store in Birmingham and I'd just moved here looking to get a something together when a friend told me about this guy who digged the same music and style as me and that he was a drummer looking for a band, we met and we just clicked. Then about a month later we were at a club that played 60s psych and garage when we met Sarah who had come up to Birmingham by chance. The three of us tried out loads of people but nothing seemed to work and it got to the point when we were thinking of packing it in until Lewis contacted me on Facebook and came down to jam and it was like we'd found the missing piece of the puzzle, though at the time we were a far more garagey sounding band. It really wasn't until Ed joined on guitar that we really found the sound and style that we are today.

Which bands has influenced you?

Joey: Good Lord, that's a tough one because it can really change from day to day. I think the band hasn't really got one set of bands that have influenced us because we all dig the same sounds, but we can all be into really different things at any one time, for me personally it's always been the British psychedelic bands like Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd, The Pretty Things, The Soft Machine, The Open Mind, the Moody Blues, and Donovan, and some of the west coast bands like Love and Jefferson Airplane mixed with the early prog and kraut rock bands like Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Yes, Black Widow, Black Sabbath, and Brain Ticket.

Why “Lady Medusa” was chosen to be the first digital single?

Joey: "Lady Medusa" wasn't really picked by us as a single, it just seemed that was the track out of the three that people really loved. But we weren't happy with the mix so we went back into the studio and tweaked it. When the first twist in the tale E.P comes out in early September on CD all three tracks have been remixed so they sound so much bigger.

How has the current tour been?

Joey: It's always great to be on the road and we are all genuinely close friends so there's never a dull moment. There's been highs and lows but every band has that and I think with what we're trying to do people either get it or they don't. Personally, some of the highlights for me have been playing at Lunar Festival with the likes of Donovan, Arthur Brown, and Temples. And our most recent gig in Brighton where we played to a sell out crowd and people were singing along with the songs which just blew my mind... I would love to tell you about something big happening next month but I've been sworn to secrecy...

Would you say that there is a neo-psych scene in Birmingham?

Joey: You can definitely feel there's a scene starting to form in Birmingham and it's great that it's coming from two different ends of the spectrum with the 60s psych thing, and the shoegaze revival coming together. I used to run an event in Birmingham called The Exploding Bubble Club and when I started out I wasn't expecting much I just wanted somewhere me and the band could go, but it ended up being this massive night that people would travel from all over Europe to come to, and loads of cool guys from Birmingham that I'd never met appeared. Birmingham always gets a bum deal really and gets overlooked for London, Liverpool and Manchester, but there's been some amazing bands like Black Sabbath, The Idle Race, and Roy Woods bands (The Move and ELO) and some amazing venues like Mothers Club that get forgotten.

Tell us about the next releases. What do the audience can wait? 

Joey: Well, we're working with a great label called HeviSike, so we're about to put out the first twist in the tale as a hard copy hopefully with a 7" release and then in early October we shall be releasing our new four track 7" EP and Double A-Side single which you will be able to purchase from either our Facebook or from HeviSike's website.
